Our Philosophy

Guardian Families

At Golden Gates Retrievers we are completely against keeping dogs in cages just to produce puppies. All of our dogs live in loving homes where they are spoiled rotten. The females come to stay with us just before they give birth and stay until the puppies are weaned. After the female has completed her breeding time, she is retired and becomes that family's pet for the rest of her life.

The guardian family is provided a Golden puppy at no cost. While the Golden is in our program, we cover routine vet expenses for vaccines and annual vet exams. Of course, we cover all vet expenses related to pregnancy and delivery.

The guardian family is responsible for food, toys, monthly heartworm and flea meds and vet costs for sick visits such as an ear infection or diarrhea because the dog ate something it shouldn't have, things like that.

We would have a legal binding signed contract that lays out the following information:

- The vet the dog will be seeing.
- The type of food required for the dog.
- The owners are also responsible for keeping the dog on a monthly dose of heartworm prevention.

- We will cover the cost of all vaccinations, microchipping and any pregnancy related vet visits.
- The guardian owners are obligated, and will be legally bound, to keep their ‘in season’ female away from all other males.

- The guardian owners must agree not to leave the dog outside unattended during her cycle.
- Guardian owners have to be committed to watching for signs of their female cycling and report such to the breeder owner.
- We do reserve the right to retire early any dog that does not respond well to the breeding process or does not meet our criteria.
- We will arrange and pay for the spay of the dog once she has completed her contractual agreement.
